Artists
The National KOLO Ensemble of Folk Songs and Dances was founded in 1948. For more than seventy-five years, it has preserved, nurtured, and presented traditional art at the highest artistic level through dance, song, music, and customs. In the development of its artistic repertoire, many of Serbia’s most distinguished choreographers, composers, ethnomusicologists, ethnologists, ballet artists, and other experts have contributed. Together, they have shaped a recognizable artistic style, expressed primarily through the richness and diversity of its stage and musical forms. The KOLO Ensemble is a unique cultural ambassador, having performed on all continents in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall and the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, the Théâtre de Chaillot in Paris, the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, the Cologne Opera, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, the Sydney Opera House, the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing, and many others. More than sixty high-level artists, performers who are both dancers and singers, together with fifteen musicians, present the richness and diversity of Serbian traditional heritage. The ensemble enjoys an outstanding reputation both domestically and internationally and is the recipient of numerous prestigious national and international awards in recognition of its significant contribution to culture.
