OF THE ETERNAL LIGHT UPON THE FACES OF YOUR SAINTS

Concert of electronic music by Marko Nikodijević for cello and computer-controlled tam-tams

Soloists Marko Nikodijević, electronics
Francesco Dillon, violoncello

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Of the Eternal Light upon the Faces of Your Saints, prayers and antiphons for cello and computer controlled tam−tams, was commissioned to mark the 700th anniversary of the birth of Fra Angelico in Florence in 2025. Inspired by the spiritual light that permeates Fra Angelico’s frescoes, the composition emerges as a meditative, spatially immersive sound world, featuring cellist Francesco Dillon and the composer himself on electronics. The work draws extensively on chants from the Orthodox Octoechos.

Artists

Marko Nikodijević studied Composition in Belgrade under Professor Srđan Hofman. After completing his studies in Serbia, he continued his education with Marco Stroppa in Stuttgart. He subsequently settled in Germany, where he has frequently worked as a resident composer and received numerous international commissions. Deeply influenced by techno music and long fascinated by fractal structures, Nikodijević assigns a central role in his music to geometric patterns and digital technologies. Working with strict compositional procedures and computer-based algorithms, he samples music from different historical periods, incorporates elements of electronic dance music and folk traditions, and combines live electronics with rich orchestral textures. The result is a series of psychedelic musical worlds in which technical sophistication and emotional intensity merge into a powerful and immersive artistic experience. In addition to his engagement in concert music, he is also active in electronic music production in collaboration with Luka Kozlovački.

Francesco Dillon, violoncello, has established an outstanding international career. He has performed in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Konzerthaus Wien in Vienna, Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam, the Berlin Philharmonie, Hakuju Hall in Tokyo, and many others. He has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician with ensembles such as the Filarmonica della Scala, the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the RAI National Symphony Orchestra, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, Oulu Sinfonia, and the Orchestra della Toscana. He has collaborated with conductors including Giuseppe Sinopoli, Susanna Mälkki, Luciano Berio, and Peter Rundel, among others. Among his most notable recent engagements are his appearance as a soloist at the Amsterdam Cello Biennale (2024), a performance with Ensemble Remix at Casa da Música in Porto, a solo tour of Japan in spring 2025, and a recital at Teatro alla Scala as part of the Milano Musica Festival. Francesco Dillon is particularly devoted to contemporary music. He has worked closely with renowned composers such as Philip Glass, Vinko Globokar, Sofia Gubaidulina, Giya Kancheli, Arvo Pärt, and Terry Riley. He has also collaborated with experimental musicians including Matmos, Pan Sonic, William Basinski, and John Zorn.
